It has been a long time since I looked at it, but if I recall right Langrisser III uses a 16x16 pixel font whereas Langrisser IV and V use a 12x12 pixel font. That's why I gave Kil a 6x12 font to use in his patch.
Honestly, for a game as text-heavy as Langrisser, a 6x12 font is nice since you can fit so much more text on the screen without having to click and advance the dialogue. The problem with Kil's font is he tried to give the m a bit more shape and it threw off the x-height of the glyph. I've attached the original font in case you're curious how it differs.
As for how to arrange the naming screen, I would suggest doing something like:
A B C D E F a b c d e f 0 1 2 3 4
G H I J K L g h i j k l 5 6 7 8 9
M N O P Q R m n o p q r ! ? , .
S T U V W X s t u v w x
Y Z y z
Or you could group it by 5s, only problem then is the last line gets a lone z.
Running the characters longwise across the screen makes it a bit of a pain to enter things because it requires so many left and right clicks. This approach makes navigation a bit quicker.
CWX, I would go with whatever is functional and is the least work for you. It's just not worth it to pour a ton of your own unpaid man hours into a screen you only see once during the entire game.
